Uniform Policy update

The Uniform Policy has been updated recently and will be effective from 22 July 2019.

The major changes have been the introduction of plain blue jeans and removal of leggings and jeggings.

Intensive Learning Program - Race to the Moon

Year 8/9 students participated in a 2 week intensive program where they explored problems under the topic ‘Race to the Moon’. In teams, students competed against each other under 4 categories: Manufacturing, Resources, Biology and Energy. Thursday afternoon saw the 39 teams set up a stall and pitch their product to teachers, students and community members. The winning teams (pictured) have won a full day excursion to Hamilton Secondary College Space School where they will participate in the Mission to Mars program and expand their STEM, communication and teamwork skills. Well done to all teams who participated.

Closure & Bus Information for 1 July 2019

Dear Families,

We wish to inform you that Victor Harbor High School will be closed on Monday 1 July 2019 due to a vote for industrial action by members of the Australian Education Union at this site.

The Education Director has approved the closure on the grounds that insufficient staff will be on duty to enable me as Principal to ensure that adequate standards of students’ safety and welfare can be provided.

Normal education programs will recommence at the site on Tuesday 2 July 2019.

School Surfing

Round Three of school surfing was held in very wintery conditions at Dump Beach on Monday.

Victor Harbor High Surfers finished 2nd overall in both the female and male divisions.

Congratulations to Bella, Hannah, Noah and Harry for braving the cold to represent their school. The under 16 girls final was well represented by VHHS with Poppy finishing 2nd, Charlie, 4th and Amelie 5th overall. The under 16 boys narrowly missed out on the final to claim a respectable 5th from the 15 teams that competed on the day.  A warm shower and hot food was welcomed by all at the end on the day.

Mayor and local councillors visit

We were delighted to have our local Mayor and a number of local councillors to visit our school today. There was a brief informal meeting with the school's senior leaders discussing support and opportunities for our students and their families. Then our guests joined us in attending our whole school assembly.
We thank them for their time and interest and look forward to working closely with our local council representatives into the future

School Surfing

Some excellent results Friday 17 May at the first round of school surfing. VHHS won the Open Girls division, with Hannah and Bella picking off some great waves in the final. We also had 4 girls make the final in the u16 girls, with Poppy finishing 1st and Tess 2nd overall. VHHS also finished 3rd in close finals in both the boys divisions. Congratulations to all competitors and student judges..

Year 11 Tourism - Working in the Tourism Industry- Barista Experience!

Year 11 Tourism students have this term been learning about the nature of work in the tourism industry, researching a specific tourism related career and preparing for 'mock interviews' creating resumes, cover letters, undertaking company research and interview preparation skills. Along with this, students have had some barista / coffee making experience, which can now be added to resumes! 

 Thanks to Pre-service teacher Miss Ling for sharing your expertise from many years working at local well know coffee establishments. All students have described the procedure, trial and error researched to improve and were able to make a delicious coffee with some practice.  

 A HUGE thank-you to Dorcen Waters at  KOMMON GROUNDS COFFEE for very kindly and generously donating not one but two bags of delicious 1kg Coffee beans for students to trial with. Staff - watch this space as coffees will be available for purchase in the coming weeks with some fundraising initiative by school world Challenge team taste@commongrounds.com.au

Year 9 Camp -Woodhouse - Week 1, Term 2

At the start of this term, year 9 students and their wonderful mentor teachers and support staff braved the rain and cooler conditions to camp at Wood-house Activity Centre in the Adelaide Hills. The focus of the camp was building relationships, escaping technology and having fun with some team building activities including putting up tents, get-to-know you games, lazer skirmish amongst nature (which was a crowd favourite),  climbing the boulder wall, Frisbee golf, meandering through the labyrinth and of course making there way through the obstacles on Challenge Hill! Well done and thank-you to all involved (we are welcoming feedback from students, parents and staff for next years Year 9 camp event)

Year 8's Meet the Mayor

Some of our Year 8 students participated in a visit to the Victor Harbor Civics Centre. During this excursion they met the Mayor and during a mock council meeting, took on various roles in the running of the city. The students were appreciative of the experience and we thank the Mayor for the time she spent with the students.

Biggest Morning Tea & National Volunteer Week Celebration

On Friday 24 May from 10:15am to 11:00am we will be holding our Biggest Morning Tea and National Volunteer Week celebration.

We welcome all of our current school volunteers and anyone who may be interested in becoming a volunteer for our school to attend this event, if you are available. Please RSVP via email dl.0799.info@schools.sa.edu.au or phone 8551 1900 if you would like to attend.

We value all that our volunteers undertake for our school and community. There are many behind the scenes, out of hours and offsite occurrences of your often quiet and diligent support of our students and staff in many different endeavours. This shared morning tea will also recognise the valuable contributions that the Cancer Council organisation provide and your financial donations will be gratefully received in support of them.

Sadly, most of us have been or will be impacted by cancer. One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

But today, thanks to research funded by morning teas like ours, more of us are surviving cancer than ever before. Almost seven in 10 Australians will survive at least five years after a cancer diagnosis.

Year 12 Society and Culture - Middle School waste project

As a part of Year 12 Society and Culture 2019, Ebony, Kelsea, Alison and Mimi are focusing on making a change within the middle school. By educating students on the two-bin system and the implications of litter in the environment. In an attempt to minimise waste going into the incorrect bins, we will be implementing general waste and recycling posters around the middle school, outlining what waste goes in what bin. By applying these posters, we not only aim to minimise incorrect disposal within our school, but we aim to promote reducing, re-using, and recycling, on a larger scale by making the students aware of the environmental impacts.

The Addams Family - Great talents and great entertainment

School Sailing Championships

Thank you to a couple of members of our dedicated staff, Emma Brown and Tim Frears for all of their hard work organising team sailing in the holidays. 

They jumped through many hoops and made many phone calls to allow our students to compete in the SA secondary school team racing championship in Goolwa during the second week of the holidays.

The students that were lucky enough to be a part of this really enjoyed themselves and despite the weather conditions being too windy on the last day they worked together in a composite crew of mixed schools and ability to finish their races with smiles on their faces and experience that will keep them coming back for many more seasons. Well done to everyone involved.
